Meet the newest addition to the A-Town staff!

As hard as it is to believe, it is almost time for school to start again. We are excited for a new school year and new students who will be attending Hedding. School starts on Wednesday, August 17, 2022. Our school hours will be from 8:10 a.m.-3:20 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Lunch and Breakfast - Hedding is a nut-free school
Lunch and breakfast will be served at school. Breakfast is from 7:45-8:05. Students will have 25 minutes for lunch, followed by 20 minutes of recess. Teachers will take lunch count at the start of each day. All hot lunches are nut free. Students may bring their lunch to school, but may not bring any item containing nuts. As such, students may not bring a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, anything containing peanut butter, or any other type of nut. Lunch supervisors will confiscate any item brought from home containing nuts, and we will provide the student with another option from our school’s kitchen.
Students will be allowed in the building at 7:45 a.m. As such, please drop your student off between 7:45 a.m. and 8:10 a.m. Please do not park on the North side of Latimer. This North side should be to stop and drop off a students only. Parking is available on the South side of Latimer and on Swartz. Abingdon buses will be dropping off on Monmouth Street at 7:40 a.m, and the Avon bus will drop off on Monmouth Street at 8:00 a.m. Parents should check to make sure their child(ren) are symptom free before sending to school, which includes taking their temperature. Abingdon students will be allowed to enter the building at 7:45 to eat breakfast in the gym. Grades 2-5 students, who have already eaten breakfast, may go to their playground. Grades 3-5 will go to the playground on the West side of the building and students in grades K-2 will go to the playground on the East side of the building. K-2 students who are dropped off should wait outside the front doors until being led through the building by one of our paraprofessionals to the playground. Grades 3-5 students should be dropped off on Pennsylvania Street and access the West playground through the gate along Pennsylvania. Bus riders will come through the North doors on the Monmouth Street side of the building and be led to their playground. If it is raining or the temperature or wind chill is below 20 degrees F., students should enter the building and will wait in the hallway outside their classroom
School Day
Students will go to the classroom between 8:05-8:10 a.m. Students will remain in their classrooms at their seats as much as possible. All students K-5 will have either PE or Music and Art each day.
Students will be dismissed at 3:20 p.m.
Nurse
We have a full-time nurse here each day. For a well student who needs a bandaid, ice pack, daily prescribed medication, etc…, the classroom teacher will call the nurse, who will come to the classroom to provide what the student needs. For a student who becomes ill at school, the classroom teacher or staff member will call the nurse, who will come to the classroom to escort the student to the nurse’s office, where the nurse will provide care and call a parent or emergency contact to pick up the child and advise of Illinois Department of Public Health protocols.
End of School Day
Dismissal is at 3:20 p.m. each day. K-2 students will be dismissed through South Exit #1 and South Exit #2 if they are a walker or being picked up. Grades 3-5 students will be dismissed out West Exit #11 and West Exit #9 onto the 3-5 playground if they are a walker or being picked up. A staff member will bring the students out of the building and make sure he/she gets to the parent or designated person for pickup. PK-2 pickup will be on Latimer, and 3-5 pickup on Pennsylvania. Again, there will be no parking on the North side of Latimer, only stop and pickup and keep moving. Parking will be on the South side of Latimer or on Swartz. On Pennsylvania, please do not park on the East side, but only stop and pick up. Bus students will be walked to the bus by their teacher or a paraprofessional.

Dear Parents/Guardians of Hedding Grade School Students:
This letter is to inform you that we have students in our school who have a life-threatening peanut/nut allergy. As such, Hedding Grade School is a peanut/nut-free environment. The students have an allergy to Peanuts/Tree Nuts. These foods, even in trace amounts, may cause a severe reaction (anaphylaxis) that can lead to death. The following symptoms may occur: hives, difficulty breathing, vomiting and diarrhea, swelling of the lips, mouth, and throat, itching and sneezing, loss of consciousness, and death due to shock. Even touching contaminated surfaces or the smell of peanuts/peanut butter may cause a reaction. School staff have been trained to recognize such a reaction and to administer medication (epinephrine) in an emergency.
As such Hedding Grade School has the following policy:
*Our hot lunch is currently and has been peanut/nut free for several years. Students who bring their lunch are to bring only foods that are peanut free. Any student who brings an item in their lunch that includes peanuts as an ingredient, will not be allowed to eat that item, and will be offered a hot lunch.
*All birthday treats/snacks brought to school must be peanut/nut free and have a list of ingredients on it.
*All birthday treats/snacks brought to school, must be dropped off at the office.
*We ask that if your child has breakfast at home, he/she washes his/her hands before coming to school.
We appreciate your support of this policy. If you have any questions, please call Hedding Grade School to speak with the school nurse or Mrs. Andrews, Principal or Mrs. Jessica Craver, Asst. Principal at 462-2363. Thank you.!

Due to delays of interior work that was to be done at Hedding before the start of school, we are going to postpone Backpack Night and have an Open House on Tuesday, September 13 from 5-7 p.m. More information regarding Open House will be provided in the coming weeks. We are sorry for the delay, but want to give teachers and staff the opportunity to get classrooms organized and ready for students. We are excited to see all students on Wednesday, August 17. School starts at 8:10 a.m. Students may arrive on campus at 7:45 a.m. to eat breakfast or go to their playground.
